Student Spotlight: Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) President, Juan Hernandez-Jimenez

As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s the perfect time to highlight the achievements of students like Juan Hernandez-Jimenez. With CU Denver once again recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution in 2024, and the College of Engineering, Design, and Computing proudly boasting a student body that is 22% Hispanic, Juan stands out as a remarkable example of excellence and leadership.

Juan grew up in Broomfield, Colorado, attending Legacy High School, a distinguished institution within the district. Despite coming from a modest background, living in a trailer park within the school’s zoning area, he was fortunate to receive a high-quality education. Reflecting on his experience now, he appreciates the unique opportunities he was given, even though they didn’t stand out to him at the time.

During high school, Juan enrolled in the automotive diesel program at BTECH, a technical school for high school students. This experience spanned his last two years of school and laid a solid foundation for his passion in automotive work. After graduating, he pursued further education at Front Range Community College in Westminster, focusing on automotive technology, while also expanding his knowledge in math and basic engineering. Although Juan excelled in mathematics during high school, he hadn’t seriously considered a career in engineering. However, his growing interest in mechanical systems, coupled with guidance from his instructors, led him to shift his academic focus, switching to an Associate of Science with the goal of transferring to a university to study engineering.

In his first year at CU Denver, Juan realized he had made the right decision. His fascination with heat transfer and fluid dynamics grew, solidifying his commitment to an engineering career.

In his second year at CU Denver, Juan joined the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Initially starting as a member, his enthusiasm and leadership potential quickly elevated him to a board officer position, and now, he serves as the organization’s president. Through SHPE, Juan not only found leadership opportunities but also formed close bonds with his two best friends. He encourages incoming students to join organizations like SHPE, as they offer both community and lasting friendships.

Outside of SHPE, Juan is actively involved in research, working with Dr. Gao in the F.I.R.E. Lab (Fluid Imaging and Renewable Energy Lab), while also participating in EUReCA. His collaboration with Dr. Gao is particularly meaningful, as it aligns with his academic and career aspirations, offering him invaluable experience in cutting-edge research.

As for the future, Juan is still weighing his options. He hopes to continue his work with Dr. Gao and eventually pursue a master’s degree. At the same time, he’s considering gaining industry experience after graduation before returning to academia. No matter the path he chooses, Juan is committed to furthering his education and securing a master’s degree.
