Empowering Renewable Energy: Get to Know Gentry Hewitt
Gentry Hewitt, a first-year ARCS Scholar and recipient of the prestigious Harry L. Willett Foundation Scholarship, is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at CU Denver. With a focus on renewable energy, Gentry is dedicated to advancing sustainable solutions for the energy sector.

Gentry’s career objective is clear: to secure an engineering position with Xcel Energy or the Department of Energy. His passion lies in researching and implementing the integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid. By utilizing advanced technologies such as smart grids, energy storage systems, and real-time data analytics, Gentry aims to enhance grid stability, efficiency, and resilience. His ultimate goal is to facilitate the transition to clean energy, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and minimize environmental impact.
Gentry’s path to engineering is as inspiring as it is unconventional. A Navy veteran and adult learner, he explored diverse roles after his military service, including working as a scuba dive instructor and managing nationwide events for luxury automotive brands such as Jaguar/Land Rover, Lincoln, and Aston Martin. However, the COVID-19 pandemic served as a turning point, inspiring him to return to school and pursue his passion for engineering.
Why CU Denver?
Originally from Troy, Missouri, a small town near St. Louis, Gentry relocated to Fort Collins, Colorado, in 2020. This move set the stage for his academic journey, beginning at Colorado State University and later transferring to CU Denver a year and a half ago.Gentry’s decision to join CU Denver was driven by its robust curriculum in power and renewable energy. “CU Denver offered a better array of classes on the subject,” he shares. This strategic choice has opened doors to remarkable opportunities, including an internship with Xcel Energy and hands-on research experiences.
When he’s not focused on academics or renewable energy research, Gentry enjoys an array of hobbies that reflect his creativity and curiosity. He is an avid writer and musician, a hiking enthusiast, and a builder of electronic and other innovative projects.
A Bright Future Ahead
With his diverse background, commitment to sustainability, and passion for innovation, Gentry Hewitt exemplifies the transformative power of education and determination. As he continues his journey, he is poised to make significant contributions to the renewable energy sector and pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
