Student Spotlight: Computer Science Major and National Society of Black Engineers Member, Zahra Abdullahi

Zahra Abdullahi’s journey into the world of technology began in Sheridan, Colorado, where she grew up and attended Sheridan High School. Now a dedicated Computer Science major with a minor in Information Systems, Zahra’s passion for tech was sparked in high school when she was first introduced to block coding. That initial experience ignited a drive within her to pursue a career in the dynamic and ever-evolving tech field.

With a clear sense of purpose, Zahra is determined to break barriers and inspire minority girls who dream of studying and excelling in technology. “My goal is to help create a more inclusive and diverse tech community, where everyone feels empowered to innovate and lead,” she shares. Her motivation extends beyond personal success—she’s passionate about paving the way for others to enter the industry and make a meaningful impact.

An active member of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Zahra is part of a community that fosters growth, leadership, and connection among underrepresented groups in STEM. Through her involvement, she has gained invaluable opportunities to network with peers and professionals who share her enthusiasm for engineering and technology. Attending NSBE conferences and events has expanded her understanding of the tech landscape and introduced her to innovative ideas and initiatives from other NSBE chapters across the country.

When Zahra isn’t busy with her studies or NSBE activities, she enjoys watching anime, traveling, and exploring Colorado’s scenic landscapes. These hobbies provide a refreshing balance to her academic and professional pursuits, allowing her to unwind while staying inspired by the world around her. She also volunteers at a local mosque called Islamic Outreach of Colorado where she helps high school and college students with their resumes and hosts events to provide a sense of community.

Looking ahead, Zahra has set her sights on working for leading tech companies like Netflix, Google, or United Airlines. She’s excited for her summer internship as a software engineer working for Nike. She envisions a future where her skills and creativity will contribute to groundbreaking projects. However, her ambitions go beyond her career goals. Zahra is committed to giving back to her community, whether through creating opportunities for others or fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for future generations in tech.

As Zahra continues her journey in tech, she remains dedicated to empowering others, breaking down barriers, and helping build a more inclusive future in STEM.

Quote of the week

“Seeing how committed CU Denver was to helping me succeed is what ultimately made my decision. Having that level of support—from advisors, faculty, and the department—makes a huge difference. It gives you confidence that you’re in the right place.”

~ Michael Ogbinaka, Current Electrical Engineering Student
